Darwin’s Channel Nine is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nine Entertainment Company.
Our corporate entity, Territory Television Pty Limited, was established by a group of Darwin businessmen in 1969 in preparation for the issue of Darwin’s first commercial television license in 1971.
The company began broadcasting as NTD Channel Eight on November 11th, 1971.
Our strong local history – and a fierce parochial presence has persisted from that time to now. Expansion was slow as the company reconsolidated in the wake of the destruction of Darwin – and its broadcasting capacity – by Cyclone Tracy in 1974, but in 1982 the company built and opened a new studio complex on the existing site at The Gardens.
Eventually Australian media giant, Kerry Packer bought Territory Television Pty Limited in 1987 when he sold Nine to Alan Bond. His private ownership continued until he reacquired the Nine Network from Bond in 1991, when Territory Television Pty Limited was rolled into the Nine Network’s ownership, where it remains today.
Channel Eight became Channel Nine in 2002 and continues to fiercely support its localism within the Darwin market. Our news service and a series of documentary and sports programming supports that policy. The annual investment in devoting a metropolitan-style Nine News to Darwin is an annual investment worth many millions of dollars and the quality and following of that service shows a huge return in Darwin’s reliance on having a voice of its own that has been grown in the Northern Territory.
Channel Nine proudly trains and invests in young people within its team, often fostering them into senior roles around the country and overseas within the television industry.
We also support local charities and community programmes across the Northern Territory.
Our commitment to The Territory Remembers is a proud example of Channel Nine’s promise to support the recognition of sacrifice, bravery and massive commitment of our Australian veterans to the defence and protection of our nation in one of the times of its most pressing crisis.
We are proud to be a small part of this wonderful effort of the Department of Arts and Museums.
